Description
Herb Pedersen was born in Berkeley California and became a staple of the California bluegrass and folk scene. In his 20s her would play banjo with Vern Williams and Ray Park and also replace Doug Dillard on banjo with The Dillards. His knowledge of harmonies made him a sought-after session musician, playing with Linda Ronstadt, Gram Parsons, Emmylou Harris and many more. In the 1980s he joined the Desert Rose Band with his high school friend Chris Hillman. Herb continues to tour with Hillman.
Pedersen wrote this song after spending a long tour on the road, coming home for a. week and getting a call right away to go back on the road for another 9 weeks. In the same week, Herb also wrote the song Old Train (actually co-wrote the song with his wife at the time). Both songs would appear on The Seldom Scene album “Old Train.” Both songs would become popular among fans of Seldom Scene.
Alan Jackson covered the song on his 2006 album “Like Red on a Rose.” Chris Hillman and Herb Pedersen would record the song live in 2010 on the album “Chris Hillman and Herb Pedersen at Edwards Barn.”
This song has since been recorded by a number of bluegrass artists, including J.D. Crowe and the New South on the “brown album,” also known as “Rounder 0044” in 1975.
The song is sung as a trio on all choruses except the first time the chorus is sung
Key of B, 82 BPM
Herb Pedersen (ver. The Seldom Scene, 1974)
I V iim IV I
Wait a minute, did I hear you say you're goin' far away again?
V iim IV V
Try to change it, I can't take the lonely nights without your love
Due on the road, to get the music done and move along?
What good does it do, play your songs for her and hear her say?
Chorus
Rollin' along, life's been good to you and even so
She comes to you, late at night's the time you hear her say once again
Chorus
Waitin' for you thirty days and nights without a rest
I got to hold on, twenty-five to go and once again, I'll hear her say
Chorus twice
