Today, we honor the life of Sheila Jordan, the jazz icon who passed away on August 11, 2025, in New York City at the age of 96.
Born November 18, 1928, in Detroit, Michigan, and raised in Pennsylvania coal country, Sheila’s love for singing began in childhood. Despite a career that unfolded in fits and starts, she created one of the most treasured vocal jazz albums of the 1960s, Portrait of Sheila on Blue Note Records. Decades later, the National Endowment for the Arts named her a Jazz Master, the highest honor in the genre.
Beyond the stage, Sheila inspired generations as an educator, teaching jazz vocal workshops at City College of New York and other institutions. Even into her 90s, her passion for music never dimmed.
