A timeless tune from Scarface: Music from the Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (1983), here’s “Calling on Mama and Gina” (Gina’s and Elvira’s Theme) on piano. Music composed by Giorgio Moroder for the 1983 film Scarface.
This particular 1980s classic movie scene portrays Cuban refugee Tony Montana returning after five years of absence to meet up with his family in Miami in the aftermath of the Mariel boatlift. All this time both Mama and Gina had thought him either dead or still imprisoned in their native land. Yet here he reappears, seemingly a successful man and embodying “the American dream”. Still Tony is not met with as much enthusiasm from Mama as he is from Gina.
Amidst the harsh turmoil of constant violence and crime that unfolds throughout the film and follows Tony—now a homicidal drug lord—with every step he takes, this one scene stands out in particular as he finds himself back among the women he grew up with—mother and sister—for one brief moment. Gina especially, more than his kid sister, embodies this kind of child-like innocence and purity that Tony has long lost along the way. Above all things, like money and power, she—perhaps along with Elvira—could have kept him stable, alive and happy. But even they couldn’t save him from the downward spiral that led to his fateful undoing…
