Composed by Robert Johnson (c.1583-1633). From John Wilson's Cheerfull ayres or ballads, Oxford, 1659.
Emma Kirkby, soprano
Jakob Lindberg, lute
Dr. John Wilson ('Cheerful Ayres') preserved Robert Johnson's settings of two of the songs from 'The Tempest'. Both songs bear Johnson's name in accordance with Wilson's claim that “some few of these Ayres were originally composed by those whose names are affixed to them, but are here placed as being new set by the Author of the rest”. (…) That the music of the two songs from 'The Tempest' is Robert Johnson's, as he originally composed it, is quite certain.— John P. Cutts, Robert Johnson: King's Musician in His Majesty's Public Entertainment, 1955
